27th Annual Tinsley Lecture
Michael Jensen
Morling College // Livestream
21 May 2026
In an age marked by political polarisation, moral confusion, and deep mistrust of institutions, what does it mean to live well together? Are we primarily citizens of the state, autonomous individuals, or something else entirely?
Join us for the 27th Annual Tinsley Lecture, where Michael Jensen will explore the distinctive political vision offered by Christian faith. Beginning with the Christian claim that ultimate allegiance belongs not to the state but to God, this lecture examines how that conviction reshapes our understanding of authority, freedom, responsibility, and belonging. Far from withdrawing from public life, Christianity offers a moral framework that both limits political power and enables genuine civic engagement. Could Christian discipleship offer a vital resource for the renewal of democratic life and the common good?

Michael Jensen (DPhil) is the Rector of St Mark’s Anglican Church, Darling Point, and a theologian, writer, and speaker. He is the author of several books on Christian faith, ethics, and public theology, including Subjects and Citizens: The Politics of the Gospel (2024), and co-hosts the podcast “With All Due Respect” with Rev. Dr Megan Powell du Toit. His work engages themes such as grace, ambition, judgment, gratitude, and the moral shape of modern life, drawing on Scripture, church history, and literature.
For the past twenty-seven years, Morling College has been pleased to host the annual Tinsley Lecture, a free, public presentation aimed at encouraging listeners to consider their place in the mission of God. Usually held in May each year, it has become one of the key events in the Morling calendar. The convenor of the Tinsley Lecture, Dr Michael Frost, says, “We’re convinced that all believers should be involved in Christian mission, which we define as the work of alerting our world to the universal reign of God through Christ.” And because that work is so wide-ranging, past lectures have covered such topics as evangelism, apologetics, social justice, Indigenous perspectives on mission, church planting, missional leadership, and various aspects of cross-cultural mission. The early lectures were published in booklet form, but since 2012, each presentation has been uploaded to the Morling website and is freely available to access. Past presenters include John Dickson, Alan Hirsch, Vinoth Ramachandra, Brooke Prentis, Bree Mills, Jon Owen, and Justine Toh.
