Partnering with Baptist Mission Australia, Morling College is offering an immersive cross-cultural field education experience that takes you deep into the heart of Papua New Guinea. From visiting medical centres to engaging with local Bible schools, you will experience firsthand the life of a thriving Indigenous church.

Your Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Mt Hagen (3 July)

  • Fly to Mt Hagen via Port Moresby and settle into your accommodation.
  • Take time to rest, adjust, and prepare for the days ahead.

Day 2: Mt Hagen Orientation (4 July)

  • Begin with an orientation to Mt Hagen and meet the BUPNG team.
  • Visit the central market to experience this important regional centre and purchase food supplies.
  • Attend a local youth event and begin engaging with the community.

Day 3: Baiyer River Valley (5 July)

  • Travel to the Baiyer River Valley, retracing the journey of the original Baptist missionaries.
  • Attend local village church services, explore the Tinsley Hub, and share a meal with local people.

Day 4: Kwinkiya Baptist Theological College (6 July)

  • Visit Kwinkiya Baptist Theological College, where village pastors receive vocational-level training in Tok Pisin.
  • Spend time with students and faculty through worship, learning, and shared recreation.

Day 5: Local Ministries in the Highlands (7 July)

  • Visit Baptist hospitals and schools in the region to gain insight into local ministry and community life.
  • Return to Mt Hagen in the evening.

Day 6: Urban Ministries in Mt Hagen (8 July)

  • Meet the BUPNG staff team and visit urban ministries in Mt Hagen.
  • Visit CLTC and connect with fellow Baptist students.

Day 7: Travel to Port Moresby (9 July)

  • Fly to Port Moresby and enjoy an afternoon to rest and reset before the final stage of the trip.

Day 8: Churches in Port Moresby (10 July)

  • Visit suburban and settlement churches in Port Moresby.
  • Hear firsthand from those ministering in very different urban contexts.

Day 9: Emerging Leaders & Student Ministry (11 July)

  • Meet with young urban church leaders and university student workers.
  • Gain insight into discipleship, mission, and leadership among the next generation.

Day 10: Sunday Worship & Debrief (12 July)

  • Attend different church services in Port Moresby.
  • Conclude the experience with a celebration meal and group debrief.

Mt Hagen & Baiyer River Valley

  • Day 1 (3 July): Fly to Mt Hagen via Port Moresby and settle into accommodation.
  • Day 2 (4 July): Orientation in Mt Hagen, meet the BUPNG team, visit the central market, and attend a local youth event.
  • Day 3 (5 July): Travel to the Baiyer River Valley, attend village church services, explore the Tinsley Hub, and share a meal with local people.
  • Day 4 (6 July): Visit Kwinkiya Baptist Theological College and spend time with students and faculty.
  • Day 5 (7 July): Visit Baptist hospitals and schools in the region before returning to Mt Hagen.
  • Day 6 (8 July): Meet the BUPNG staff team, visit urban ministries, and connect with Baptist students at CLTC.

Port Moresby

  • Day 7 (9 July): Fly to Port Moresby and enjoy an afternoon of rest.
  • Day 8 (10 July): Visit suburban and settlement churches, hearing stories from those ministering in varied contexts.
  • Day 9 (11 July): Meet with young urban church leaders and university student workers.
  • Day 10 (12 July): Attend church services in Port Moresby, followed by a celebration meal and debrief.
  • Day 11 (13 July): Return to Australia.

**The Travel Fee will be invoiced by Baptist Mission Australia following unit enrolment. Travel costs are based on typical fares from Sydney and Brisbane. Additional costs may apply for alternative departure locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Secure your spot by completing the registration form on this page and enrolling in EM040 – Cross-Cultural Field Education. A deposit of $2,000 AUD is required to confirm your place on the field education experience. The initial deposit must be paid by 14 May 2026.

To participate in the Cross-Cultural Field Education Experience, you will need to enrol in EM040 – Cross-Cultural Field Education. Your enrolment pathway depends on your current study status:

Existing AUT / Morling Students (studying for credit)

New Students (studying for credit)

  • If you are new to Morling College and would like to complete the unit for credit, you will first need to complete the student application process.
  • We encourage you to begin this early so we can discuss your study options and eligibility with you.

Casual / Audit (non-credit)

  • If you would like to participate in the experience without completing assessments or receiving academic credit, you can enrol as a casual (audit) student.

Included:

  • Return flights from Sydney
  • Accommodation throughout the tour
  • All meals as per itinerary
  • Internal transportation (bus travel and flights within Papua New Guinea)
  • Travel insurance (covered by Baptist Mission Australia)

Not included (participants must arrange separately):

  • Personal expenses such as souvenirs, additional food and drinks, laundry, and similar items
  • Personal devices for accessing Wi-Fi, where available

Participants travelling from other locations, including Perth, will need to arrange flights to either Sydney or Brisbane to join the group. This may require arriving the day prior to departure.

This approach allows the team to travel together to Papua New Guinea, including the international flight to Port Moresby and the connecting domestic flight to Mt Hagen.

Please note that additional costs may apply for travel from alternative departure locations.

  • Attend our Information Evening on Thursday, 30 April at 8:00 PM (AEDT), via Zoom
  • Enrol in EM040 – Cross-Cultural Field Education for credit or audit. Winter Intensive enrolments are now open.
  • Attend the Field Education team meetings on:
    • 14 May – the why of mission
    • 28 May – the who of mission
    • 11 June – the how of mission
    • 25 June – the what of mission
    These meetings will be held via Zoom.
  • Apply for your visa through the Papua New Guinea Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA) portal .
  • Consult your GP about recommended vaccinations for international travel, and obtain a letter confirming that you are fit to travel. You can find guidance from the Australian Government Immunisation Handbook .
  • Attend any additional training sessions as required

Payment can be made via credit card, bank transfer, or in person at our administrative office.

A detailed packing list will be provided to participants after enrolment.

In Papua New Guinea, your day-to-day costs are expected to be low. It is generally best to withdraw small amounts as needed using your debit or credit card, or use a multi-currency card such as Wise. This helps minimise the amount of cash you need to carry.

A non-refundable deposit of $2,000 AUD is required to secure your place by 14 May. This will be invoiced by Baptist Mission Australia following our unit enrolment check.
