Welcome to this short video series with Tim MacBride.

In this series, we ask: if Jesus is the answer, what was the question?

The 6 episodes outline the expectations that had been forming for centuries among the people of God, and their expectations of what the next chapter in that story would look like. We then see how Jesus turns up to answer their question… just not in the way they were thinking! The aim is for us to understand the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus in the wider context of the story of God’s people—and to find our own place in that story, too.

About the lecturer: Tim MacBride

Tim is the Principal of Morling College, where he lectures in New Testament and Preaching. His two books are, unsurprisingly, about preaching the New Testament: Catching the Wave (IVP, 2016), and To Aliens and Exiles (Cascade, 2020).

COURSE OVERVIEW

Each session includes thought-provoking reflection and discussion questions for personal or group study.
Join us on this journey of discovery as we seek to understand the profound significance of Jesus in the story of God's people and our place within it.

Session 1:

Why Jesus?

In this session, we introduce the series by raising the question: if Jesus is the answer, what was the question? And to answer this, we’ll need to consider the bigger story into which Jesus steps.

Session 2:

What Was the Question? Israel's Defining Story

This session is all about Israel’s defining story in the centuries leading up to Jesus. It shows who Israel saw herself to be, and what she expected the next chapter in her story to look like. This lays the foundation for when Jesus turns up (in session 3) claiming to be the one who would write that next chapter.

Session 3:

Why did Jesus Live?

In this session, we look at how Jesus starts to write the next chapter in Israel’s story. Through his words and deeds he demonstrates that he is the Anointed One who fulfils Israel’s hope of God’s reign returning to Jerusalem once more, setting all things right…

Session 4:

Why did Jesus Die? (Part One)

The way in which Jesus was writing the next chapter in Israel’s history wasn’t welcomed by those in power. The words and deeds we looked at in the last session fulfilled Israel’s hopes, yet also subverted them - challenging their understanding of what God’s kingdom would be like. Ultimately, it’s what got Jesus killed.

Session 5:

Why Did Jesus Die? (Part Two)

The previous session focused on the historical reasons Jesus died. This session looks at the theological reasons, and shows how these two sets of reasons can’t easily be separated!

Session 6:

Why Did Jesus Rise Again?

In this final session, we unpack why Jesus had to rise again. It wasn’t just to vindicate his claims (although it kind of does!), but it kicks off God’s restoration project for his people and his world.
